What is Remote Access? Definition and Uses

Remote Access is the capability of an authorized individual to access a specific computer or even a network from a specific location through a local network connection. Remote access allows authorized users to connect to networks they require even when they’re physically miles away. This is particularly important for employees who travel regularly, are on frequent business trips or are telecommuting to work from home. However, certain companies may not provide their employees with direct access to their networks, such as those found in call centers. In such situations, it becomes necessary for the employee to have access only to the corporate system. The basic function of Remote Access software is to allow an authorized user to have read-only access to a specific computer or network.

There are many different ways in which an administrator or Help Desk representative can use Remote Access to establish read/write access to computers. One way is through the use of security authentication features, which include various security authentication factors like password encryption and MAC (Message Authentication Code), which help a user to establish identity and authentication when logging onto a computer system. Another way is through Kerb based login which requires a matching secret word or string of characters. An example would be a Windows Naming Service (NLS), which uses a Kerb to match a login and password. Other methods that can be used to establish read/write access are encryption and digital signature.

Apart from security issues, Remote Access helps to make the working life of a Help Desk agent easier by providing a common interface for the various telecommunication devices. It also simplifies the task of establishing and managing user permissions on the various workstations that will be accessed by remotely trained personnel. This way a single set of rules can apply to all remote connections, whether these are established from within the corporate office or from an external location. All the telephones that will be connecting to these agents will have their own user permissions established automatically. The chrome remote access software also provides a browser based helpdesk session for users that facilitates easy access and navigation to help desk tickets and ticketing information.

Remote Access allows the use of chrome browser to access the control panel of the remote computer. This feature makes it possible to use the control panel of the computer without having to launch the desktop on the computer. With this convenience provided by Remote Access, it becomes easier to manage several different computers and workstations from one location. On unattended access mode, all these devices can be controlled by a user through the keyboard and mouse. This mode of operation is similar to using the keyboard and mouse of the desktop computer.

The advantages of Remote Access extend beyond simple remote access to manage multiple computers and workstations. It helps organizations to implement best practices in business management by reducing the costs and benefits of manual administration of computers. Moreover, it empowers every employee with new ways of making the best use of their workstations by implementing the latest technologies.

The remote access software is usually installed on the client computers and servers. This software makes the remote connection between the client and the server. It enables easy management of many workstations remotely. A virtual private network can be created and shared by employees while working from their own laptops or desktops, by accessing the Internet on their personal computers via remote access software.
